Dubai has a large number of professionals currently residing in the city who are considering seriously transferring to the UK as a place of employment. Others have already been offered employment. Some are still exploring. In any case, practically everyone begins the process of UK work permit visa requirements either with insufficient information or with already obsolete information.
You Need a Job Offer Before Anything Else
The UK Skilled Worker Visa does not work like some other countries where you can apply first and job hunt after arrival. You need a confirmed job offer from a UK employer before your application can move forward. And not just any employer. The company hiring you must hold a valid sponsorship licence issued by the UK Home Office.
Without it your visa application cannot be submitted. So the first practical step for any skilled worker in Dubai is making sure the employer you are negotiating with is actually a licensed sponsor.
The Salary Threshold Is Higher Than Most People Expect
This catches a lot of UAE applicants off guard. From July 2025 the general salary threshold for most Skilled Worker applications rose to £41,700 per year. There is also a minimum hourly rate requirement that applies on top of that for most standard roles.
Some professionals qualify at lower thresholds. If you hold a PhD relevant to the role, if your occupation appears on the shortage occupation list, or if you qualify as a new entrant to the workforce, different figures apply. Healthcare roles follow their own separate salary rules with lower floors.
One important thing to understand is that only your guaranteed basic salary counts toward meeting the threshold. Bonuses, commissions, and other non guaranteed pay elements are excluded. A lot of applicants in Dubai assume their full package counts and then find out during the application that it does not.
The Points Based System and What You Are Scored On

The UK assesses Skilled Worker applications through a points based system. You need 70 points to qualify. The mandatory points come from having a valid job offer from a licensed sponsor, meeting the skill level requirement for your role, and demonstrating English language ability. The remaining points come from meeting the salary threshold.
The skill level requirement also tightened in 2025. Roles now need to be at RQF Level 6 or above, which is graduate level, for most new applications. Roles that previously qualified at a lower level may no longer be eligible under the main route.
At millerncarter.ae, skilled workers based across the UAE can get proper guidance through the full application process based on the current 2026 rules rather than outdated information that could cost you a refusal.
